Club World Cup Preview

It's not about the money, money, money

The new, expanded, Club World Cup gets underway today.

We won't dwell on the merits of the tournament but the a huge prize pool (inc. $2m per win) will ensure European teams take it seriously like never before.

The tournament winner is highly likely to come from Europe and we are leaning towards those who have 'disappointed' this season - Man City (price boost 7.00 at SkyBet) and perennial Champions League winners, Real Madrid.

That said, the one bet that has caught our eye thus far is Flamengo to reach the quarter finals at 3.50 (4.00 with BetVictor).

Brazilian teams traditionally take this tournament seriously and love a Euro scalp. Of the three Brazilian sides, Flamengo have the likely best route to the Quarter Finals (and potentially beyond).

Strengthen the case is the freshness in the squad (Brazil’s season runs April-Dec season).

They also have a nice blend of several Brazilian internationals and experienced veterans), are defensively sound (4 goals conceded in 11 league games), and will be a tough nut to crack .

- Flamengo to reach Quarter Finals at 3.50

Another potentially interesting market is the Corner market. On average corners usually fall between 9.8 and 10.6, although the Premier League average is closer to 10.24.

At the CWC a new rule will be implemented whereby if the keeper does not release the ball within 8 seconds, a corner will be awarded to the opposition.

It is hard to know what, if any impact, this will have during the tournament. The current line is set at Over 600 corners (9.52), which feels under cooked.
